Preventive Dentistry in Jounieh and Tripoli

Almost everything that ends in a crown, a root canal or an extraction was, at some earlier point, something small and cheap.

What a check-up actually checks

It is not only a look for cavities. We examine the gums and measure pocket depths, check old fillings and crowns for leaking margins, look at wear patterns that point to grinding, and screen the soft tissues of the mouth for anything that should not be there.

X-rays go between the teeth and below the gum line, where roughly half of all decay starts and none of it is visible to the eye.

Cleaning below the gum line

Brushing reaches the surfaces you can see. Hardened calculus under the gum is what drives gum disease, and it can only be removed with instruments. Left alone, it destroys the bone that holds the teeth in — painlessly, until the teeth start to move.

For most patients a cleaning every six months is right. If you have active gum disease, smoke, or are diabetic, we shorten the interval.

Protecting teeth before they fail

Fissure sealants close the deep grooves in children's back teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Fluoride strengthens enamel that has started to soften but has not yet cavitated. A night guard protects teeth from the grinding most people do not know they do.

These are the cheapest treatments in dentistry and they prevent the most expensive ones.

Questions about preventive

How often should I visit the dentist?

Every six months for most people. If you have gum disease, smoke, are pregnant or diabetic, or have a history of frequent decay, we will recommend every three to four months.

Does a cleaning damage enamel?

No. Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove calculus, not enamel. Teeth can feel briefly sensitive afterwards because the surfaces they were covering are exposed again.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?

It is common, but it is not normal. Bleeding gums are inflamed gums, and inflammation is the first stage of gum disease. It is also the stage that reverses completely with treatment.

Do I still need x-rays if nothing hurts?

Yes. Decay between teeth and bone loss around them are painless until they are advanced. X-rays are how they are found while they are still small.
